The Rock ‘n Roll of the 50’s & 60’s led to the development of Disco Dancing in the 70’s and has evolved further to become what is now known as High Energy Freestyle Dancing (or Freestyle Dancing). Many people prefer the freedom of Freestyle dancing which allows tremendous scope of individual expression in contrast to other forms of dance and exercise.
High-Energy Freestyle Dancing is a fast up-beat form of dancing which encompasses 6 styles of dancing under its wide umbrella. Namely; Freestyle, Medal Work, Rock `n Roll, Latin American 3 & 4 Count Hustle (exclusive to Freestyle Dancing) and Slowdance. It is an extremely popular form of dancing both for recreational purposes and as a highly competitive sport. This is not a style exclusively for girls. In the competitive arena the style is incredibly popular with boys, who set a high standard to follow.
Dancing has a broad range of health benefits. It has been demonstrated to be effective at improving body image, self-esteem, co-ordination, creativity, attentiveness and communication skills. It can also reduce stress and anxieties. In addition it can enhance the functioning of the body’s circulatory and respiratory systems. Other benefits of dancing include increasing self-awareness, testing the impact of self on other, developing a trusting relationship and enhancing social interaction skills.
Freestyle Dancing encompasses the advantages of the dancers participating in a team sport as well as individually, that work’s on fitness, creativity, discipline and commitment. Teaching competitiveness and rewarding dancers for their achievements and allowing them to compete locally as well as nationally.
"At the studio of the Extreme Dance Company (teacher Bronwyn Vosloo), dancing is not just for the young, beautiful, graceful and talented! It is for people who are prepared to work hard and who love to dance no matter what age they are. Dancers are shaped & polished and by being entered in competitions, they are taught how to win...and how to loose!
