This year’s production entitled “Absolute Dance” includes “Act 1 La Sylphide”, (Ballet). Helena Montoya’s acclaimed “Bolero” (Spanish) as well as a new work for the department “Shaken And Not Stirred” by Cecil de Jongh (Jazz). After the success of the production of “Act 1 from Coppélia” last year, the department felt it necessary to challenge the learners even further with another work from the classical ballet repertoire, this being Act 1 from “La Sylphide. This piece has the capacity to bring out the diversity of our learners with their individual personalities in the different characters as well as teaching them a ballet in a different style of the romantic period. Del Alma (Of the Soul) The Montoya’s again work together to bring you the magic that is known as Spanish Dance. Working with rhythm, movement, music and soul the choreographers bring life to the dancers.
The Tangos de Malaga is a flamenco dance; Maria Lorca has worked with a modern style (shown in the steps and costumes) yet has managed to keep the traditional element of Flamenco in the enticing lines, footwork and movement. Jose has once shown his choreographic flair whilst working with one dancer and two guitarists – bringing out the more ‘romantic’ and lighter side to Spanish Dance. Helena Montoya amazes us with her incredible choreographic talent by producing a very special piece using Ravel’s ‘Bolero’. Says Helena: ‘I find this music so haunting, so inspiring. Not only is it always a challenge for me to choreograph to this piece of music, but it is also a challenge for the dancers’.
Shaken and not Stirred Cecil de Jongh brings to the department a new and exciting Jazz work named, Shaken and not Stirred. He’s MI6’s best. That irresistible charm and spy-like swagger that makes even the worst Femme Fatale betray her own like a knife in the back… a dagger; His enemies and peers respect him alike, for he is the best at what he does, picking a fight; Always there when he’s needed, to rescue the girl, to stay undefeated; Clean cut in his tux as he drinks his vodka martini, the call of justice, the voice of humanity, resounds with the roar of his Aston Martini;
For all Q’s toys, gismos and gadgets, nothing can replace the man with all these facets.
Be sure not to miss this wonderful experience of dance.
The show takes place on 9 April 2010 - 11 April 2010 at the State Drama Theatre. For more information contact Alma Ferreira 012 460 6221 X 208 or 0832827926
