DANCE CREW was started in 1993 by Amy Gould and senior dancers of the Amy Gould Ballet School.

They had the following objectives:

- To create original chorographic works of our time and place in society
- To take ballet to communities that had very little knowledge of the art
- To develop and stimulate new audiences
- To encourage, support and train the youth from the rural communities and
- By so doing generate work for themselves

Our objectives have not changed but have increased and become more finely tuned.

As the owner of the ballet school and its premises I was in a position to immediately provide an infrastructure of office facilities, rehearsal and training space and storage space for costumes etc. This has now developed into a 100-seater theatre to ensure performance opportunities at our convenience.

We have a vast body of original work created for the company which ranges in subject matter from Aids and Alcoholism, The Seventies, to Nautical Barbi & Ben a work for children.

Teachers trained in the school and company are currently teaching in Piketberg, Saron, Tulbagh, Athlone, Retreat, Heathfield and Grassy Park as well as in the mother studio in Tokai. We have travelled and performed all over the Western Cape, The Eastern Cape and maintain our contacts and assistance programs with the areas visited. Collecting shoes, costumes, ongoing training and combined performances.

Two years ago we started a Learning Through Dance program in the Eastern Cape working with school teachers and people from various community outreach programs. Shortly we will be working with 40 new dancers from the West Coast on request from the department of Arts and Culture in the Western Cape.

The original dancers who were part of the establishment of Dance Crew serve on the Management Board with our lead male dancer Gareth du Toit being Chairman of the Board.

We have established bursaries for those in need with talent and a strong work ethic. This is increasing all the time. The school as well as private funders make these bursaries possible.

We have generated much work for ourselves as well as those in the related field. Three years ago we allowed artists of all kinds to sit in on Dance Crew classes and rehearsals. We held an exhibition of some of the work produced and sold over R20,000 in 1 week at a local gallery.

Dance Crew is in the process of giving birth to yet another great project so check our website and keep up with us. It will be of benefit to many in the Arts family.

The company is and has been funded by, Western Cape Department of Arts and Culture, National Arts and Culture, The Chiappini Trust, Arts & Culture Trust as well as private companies, individuals and Amy Gould in her private capacity.
