MOVEMENT SCIENCE INSTITUTE: BALLET SCHOOL

The Movement Science Institute provides a unique service which focuses on specific dance conditioning and rehabilitation exercise prescription to improve the dance technique and quality of movement of the recreational dancer, as well as to enhance the performance of the competitive dancer. The Movement Science Institute’s founder’s passion for ballet initiated the opening of a ballet school as part of the services provided by the Movement Science Institute.

The Movement Science Institute Ballet School‘s teaching staff is registered with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). They have vast experience in teaching both children and adults and come highly recommended in the industry. The Movement Science Institute Ballet School caters for the novice, recreational and advanced dancer, from tiny tots to adults. We can assure each student the best ballet education at a high standard of teaching.

Novice and Recreational Adult Ballet

All women and girls, at some stage in their lives, desire to wear a pink tutu and to lace up the ribbons of their own pointe shoes. Some women take ballet classes, others continue with their normal routine and only when the ballet comes to town, they wish that they too had taken ballet lessons.

Ballet training can commence at any age. Some women are under the impression that if they did not start ballet at an early age, there is no place for them in a ballet class among the bendy ten year olds and the semi–professional twenty year olds. This is most certainly not the case at the Movement Science Institute Ballet School.

Adult ballet has numerous benefits:

• Improves muscle tone and strength
• Improves general flexibility
• Improves posture
• Improves self esteem
• Promotes weight loss
• It relieves stress
• Keeps the spirit and body young
• Gives a new appreciation for classical music
• And most of all, it’s the enjoyment with your friends and girlfriends

At the Movement Science Institute Ballet School, we cater for all shapes and sizes, young and old as well as the physically fit and the more sedentary. Students can be assured of an educational and pleasurable experience under the careful and professional instruction of the teaching staff.

We offer absolute beginners adult ballet classes which require no previous ballet training. In these classes the fundamentals of classical ballet are explained. For the brave and competitive beginner dancer, there is the option to do annual exams or presentation classes. Exams are done in front of a registered RAD examiner. Presentation classes are done with the teacher and examiner present. These classes have been implemented as a means of advancing students who do not cope well in a dancing exam or where the body of work has not been completed i.e. students that only dance once a week. Enrolling to do an exam or presentation class is optional. All ballet classes are scheduled after working hours.

Intermediate and Advanced Adult Ballet

The Movement Science Institute Ballet School offers intermediate, advanced and professional adult ballet classes. The intermediate and advance classes are designed with the more experienced dancer in mind. For the intermediate classes, dancers should have a good understanding of classical ballet technique and will have the option to do annual exams. The advanced classes accommodate adults who have passed the Advanced 2 RAD ballet exam or other equivalent exams.

For professional and ex–professional dancers the Movement Science Institute offers specific dance conditioning exercises as part of the ballet class. Exercises are designed to improve technique and to strengthen weak areas at risk for injury.

Guest teachers are also invited to teach open classes. These classes are scheduled during the year to expose students to other dance genres.

The Movement Science Institute’s Philosophy

• To improve the quality and movement development of all students
• To provide a safe environment for students to express themselves and to explore and develop movement patterns
• To develop artistically astute technicians of dance, who are knowledgeable of the influences, history and culture which have shaped dance genres through time and in doing so, creating an educated an appreciative audience

Our wish is to impart the knowledge and love for dance in a warm, accepting environment which encourages creativity and participation. Discipline and commendable behavior are paramount to the internship of dance, but not so important that a hurt feeling is the end result.

Students will be expected to participate to the best of their ability and always nudged a little more to expand on their own expectations of themselves. High expectations will however never cloud the love and passion for ballet.

With an explorative teaching style, students will absorb the concept of the objective in a manner that will benefit them for years to come. Most of all, ballet should be fun, it’s a learning process, and if done correctly, it can become a lifelong hobby and bring much enjoyment.

The Movement Science Institute is dedicated to promote the on–going health and well–being of dancers and to “make the impossible possible, the possible easy and the easy elegant” - M Feldenkrais
