At the tender age of seven, Harold Van Buuren was sent to his first ballet class with Yoka van Polen because “one day my uncle Geoffrey who danced professionally said ‘you’re dirty, you’re fat and you going to ballet class.’ That’s where it all started.” (Adrienne Sichel 18 Oct 2005)
A dancer who is as dramatic off stage as he is on stage has made a career out of using his small stature to make a bold statement. He thought he had to be tall but he only had to dance as big as possible.
Harold Van Buuren was trained in a wide array of dance forms including Classical Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Freestyle, Ballroom and Latin American. The multi-talented, exceedingly stylish dance icon made his name well known throughout the world. Harold started his professional career by doing three extravaganzas’ at Sun City before dancing on the Achille Lauro just before it sank.
He won numerous titles as a Ballroom & Latin American Championship Dancer, representing South Africa internationally on numerous occasions.
He later moved to Paris where he worked at 'Le Paradis Latin', first as principal dancer, then went on to directing & choreographing shows at this world famous theatre, which later led to touring Europe to dancing on TV shows and in concerts. He worked with stars such as Ricky Martin, Sting, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, Harry Connick Jnr, Gloria Gaynor, Liza Minelli and more. He was also invited by David LaChapelle as Guest Dance Couple in his fashion show for the 'Festivale De La Mode' at the Galeries Lafayette in Paris, France.
Harold Van Buuren was personally congratulated & awarded a certificate of merit by the Royal Family of Monaco for his participation as a principal dancer in 'Le Bal De La Rose' Charity Ball, annually held at the Sporting Club of Monaco, Monte Carlo.
He believes South Africa with the multi-cultural divide has potential to explode and he can now share what he has learnt abroad with his fellow South Africans where he can teach extensively and coach show dance.
This proudly South African dance dynamite is truly an icon to all in the dance world, and an inspiration to all those dancers who are reaching for the moon as it has shown they are able to land among the stars.
