Talented dancer Thandumzi Moyakhe, and one of the founding members of Mzansi Productions, tragically passed away on Christmas day in a motor vehicle accident.
During the first company class of 2009, a solitary bouquet marked his usual spot at the ballet barre and echoed the feeling of loss in a manner that words cannot do. Thandumzi was born in Gugulethu, Cape Town on 24 April 1984 and passed away on 25 December 2008. He was buried in his home town on 3 January 2009.
Thandumzi first started dancing in 1994 through the Dance For All Project and during this time the late Phyllis Spira, who has also passed away in 2008, played an important role in preparing him for a career in dancing. He pursued dancing as a subject up to his final school year in Grade 12 at the Alexander Santon High School. On completing his schooling, he joined The South African Ballet Theatre. Other companies he has worked with include Jazzart, Cape Town City Ballet, Ballet Theatre Afrikan and iKapa Dance Theatre. In 2000 he started choreographing his own works, such as Fear of the Dark, Life and Dancing Violin. He has worked extensively with international as well as local choreographers. In 2008 he became a founding member of Mzansi Productions and took part in the inaugural season at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in August 2008 as well as Mzansi Productions’ Nutcracker at the Lyric Theatre, Goldreef City.
Thandumzi has been taken from us at a time that he really started to establish himself as a dancer of superb ability and his talents will be sorely missed. His last appearance with the Company was during its season of the Nutcracker and the reviewer of the Star, Ms Adrienne Sichel commented on his performance as follows in her review for The Star and Pretoria News on 25 November: “……and an alluring Spanish Sweet meat with Maroccan flovours (stunningly danced by Yarisha Singh and Thandumzi Moyake).”
The memorial will be open to the media, members of the public and supporters and will take place at the ballet studios of Mzansi Productions in Irene, Centurion.
