Review by Tina James
We attended the opening night of The Nutcracker at the State Theatre in Pretoria amidst many elegantly dressed patrons who responded to the call to dress up for the occasion.
This performance also celebrated the appointment of Ms Burnise Sylvius to the position of prima ballerina at the Joburg Ballet. The announcement at the end of the performance made for a fitting end to an entertaining evening of ballet.
The ballet was a delightful production which was thoroughly enjoyed by our party. As always, the energy, technical skills and strength of the Cuban male dancers added sparkle to the performance. The more expansive choreography for the young Clara allowed Angela Maree to provide a fresh and credible interpretation of the role. It was a pleasure to see the participation of so many children, particularly as they were well-rehearsed and conveyed that sense of anticipation so typical of children at a Christmas celebration.
Simple but beautiful set designs made the most of the space offered by the State Theatre's huge stage - we particularly loved the snow scene, and the beautiful costumes in the Act II.
Overall, a really enjoyable production with good dancing and effective stage designs. A production where one could experience the beauty of ballet in this accessible production.
